So, I talked about the chevrons, but I think I made it seem like I was going to do this, but not really all that soon. Well, surprise surprise we already did it. It was a process though because we had a lot of interruptions, but we finished it and I’m in love.
Here’s what my bathroom looked like before. And, you’ll have to ignore the partially painted floor. See, I kept getting called over the weekend to work, so Sean got tired of waiting on me and just got started. Which I really appreciated, but it meant that I didn’t get a complete before picture. He suggested that I just take a picture of the other bathroom, but I figured you all would be confused because that bathroom looks nothing like this one except the floor is the same.

So we taped everything off and then started to paint. We used floor paint for indoor/outdoor use. Unfortunately this type of paint only comes in a one gallon size cans. We didn’t need anywhere near a gallon for this small bathroom. So, here’s a tip: Home Depot will make you a gallon of the light color paint first, then when you’re ready for the next color, you can take it back to be darkened. So basically we got 2 colors for the price of one!
Here it is all painted white and ready for tape:
The tape was the hardest part of this whole thing, and I am so fortunate because Sean did it all! We drew on the floor with pencil before we painted just to get an idea of how we wanted to space the chevrons. Obviously after we painted we had to mark it for real, but figuring out the spacing early was key. We used chalk to mark the peaks and valleys and taped the whole thing.

And we used a homemade ruler (previously a paint stirrer from Home Depot) to space out the chevrons. They were 12 inches high, and we used the width of the room to figure out how much space should be between the peaks and valleys (the chalk line was our guide). You might be looking at the tape and thinking that we were effed because not all of it is perfectly straight, but we really weren’t. The parts that required paint had smooth clean tape lines, and for the ones that were going to stay white, we weren’t quite as concise with them because it didn’t matter.

Then, I painted the next color. See what I mean about how the imperfect tape doesn’t matter:

I know you’re thinking that it’s too similar and that I’m crazy, but I liked the tone on tone, and I knew in the end it would be really good. I painted a couple coats and then I was ready to peel off the tape!

And another:

And because I like you, just one more:

I’m so happy with how it turned out, now I’m already dreaming up our next project!

I LOVE IT!!! Awesome job!
Wow, crap, that looks amazing!!! I'm super-impressed!
Holy Moly!! That looks AMAAAZING! Did you paint right over the tile? How can we not see the grooves? It looks absolutely perfect–you guys are such pros at this stuff!
I did a bad job explaining that the floor is actually linoleum even though it looks like tile, so yep, we just painted right over the lineolium.
That looks really great- love the color choices for that room.
I'm so, so, so in love with this! Kelsey, you are amazing! Great job!!
I LIKE this!! What a great way to add some snazz to the bathroom!
Kelsey, you never cease to amaze me — this is FABULOUS! I love it.
It looks fabulous! You have a great eye for design my friend
Wow, that looks amazing!!! Great job!!!
That is freaking amazing!
It look so incredibly good! I love the similar tones.. it gives it a real pop without overwhelming the small space. Amazing!!!
I LOVE IT! So glad to hear it was linoleum. When I though it was tile I was like "Man, my husband would never let me do that!!" Plus, I was very confused about where the grooves went! Dang… makes me wish we had linoleum. The subtle color change is just perfect, and you finally got to use chevrons!
Oh yeah, Sean would think I'd lost my mind if I wanted to paint over tile. And, actually the people at home depot thought I was crazy for spending any time with linoleum because tile isn't that expensive, but I love it, so clearly the guys at the paint counter were wrong.
omg FRO YO you DIDN'T. That looks AMAZING. tweeting. this.
Yay!! I love the tweets!
it looks fabulous! that's quite a project. you two are redecorating mavens!
BRILLIANT! I wish I could paint the linoleum in our apartment. If I could, I'd do this, this weekend!
Fro Yo – your cabinet stencil backing & these floors are perfection!!! I love the colors you chose as well
Aww, thanks so much!! I really appreciate it.
!! Fantastic job, guys! I too thought it was tile at first and wondered where the grooves went, but now I get it — linoleum. Wow, I really really love the transformation, and like Kimberly kinda wish our bathroom had linoleum now! Did you have to put a sealer over it so the paint won't scratch? I want to find somewhere to do this in our house, ha!
I was going to put a sealer over it because I read online that I should, but then the guy at Home Depot told me I didn't need to. Which was actually good because that stuff stinks! And, we don't have any windows in that bathroom. So we'll try it out now without the sealer and if I worry about it getting messed up then I'll rethink the sealer. However, it's a low traffic area, so I'm hopeful it will hold up just find for now (or as long as linoleum is supposed to hold up.
Wow! It makes such a big difference! It looks fantastic.
That looks amazing, Kelsey!! I would love to try it, but I think I'm going to start small, like a rug. I would love to do this one day, though. Great job!
looks SO PRETTY!!!!! Chevrons were the way to go! Linoleum SUCKS… this way, if you want to do something different later, you didn't invest THAT much money.
great idea!
OK this is seriously amazing!!
Wow!! That looks amazing! Fabulous job. I'm totally jealous of your creative/crafty genes.
This turned out AMAZING!
Can Sean come over and tape for us next time we need to paint?
Great job! I am so jealous! It looks fabulous!!!
We can't afford to remodel our bathroom right now, but I really dislike our floor. You have completely inspired me!
hi! Sorry if you've already answered this, but did your linoleum have any texture? And what kind of paint did you use? Is it a high traffic or anything special? it looks great!!
The linoleum did not have any texture to it, though it did kind of have indentations like it was tile (but it wasn't). And, we used floor paint so it is for high traffic. Hope that helps!
How did I miss this before?? Love the floors.
