The Chevron Bathroom

So, I talked about the chevrons, but I think I made it seem like I was going to do this, but not really all that soon.  Well, surprise surprise we already did it.  It was a process though because we had a lot of interruptions, but we finished it and I’m in love.

Here’s what my bathroom looked like before.  And, you’ll have to ignore the partially painted floor.  See, I kept getting called over the weekend to work, so Sean got tired of waiting on me and just got started.  Which I really appreciated, but it meant that I didn’t get a complete before picture.  He suggested that I just take a picture of the other bathroom, but I figured you all would be confused because that bathroom looks nothing like this one except the floor is the same.

So we taped everything off and then started to paint.  We used floor paint for indoor/outdoor use.  Unfortunately this type of paint only comes in a one gallon size cans.  We didn’t need anywhere near a gallon for this small bathroom.  So, here’s a tip: Home Depot will make you a gallon of the light color paint first, then when you’re ready for the next color, you can take it back to be darkened.  So basically we got 2 colors for the price of one!

Here it is all painted white and ready for tape:

The tape was the hardest part of this whole thing, and I am so fortunate because Sean did it all!  We drew on the floor with pencil before we painted just to get an idea of how we wanted to space the chevrons.  Obviously after we painted we had to mark it for real, but figuring out the spacing early was key.  We used chalk to mark the peaks and valleys and taped the whole thing.

And we used a homemade ruler (previously a paint stirrer from Home Depot) to space out the chevrons.  They were 12 inches high, and we used the width of the room to figure out how much space should be between the peaks and valleys (the chalk line was our guide).   You might be looking at the tape and thinking that we were effed because not all of it is perfectly straight, but we really weren’t.  The parts that required paint had smooth clean tape lines, and for the ones that were going to stay white, we weren’t quite as concise with them because it didn’t matter.

Then, I painted the next color.  See what I mean about how the imperfect tape doesn’t matter:

I know you’re thinking that it’s too similar and that I’m crazy, but I liked the tone on tone, and I knew in the end it would be really good.  I painted a couple coats and then I was ready to peel off the tape!

And another:

And because I like you, just one more:

I’m so happy with how it turned out, now I’m already dreaming up our next project!
